The Relationship Between Academic Burnout and Academic Procrastination Among Student-Athletes: A Cross-Sectional Study

Abstract

Background: Burnout and academic procrastination are common psychological challenges among university student-athletes, often undermining academic performance and overall well-being. Despite their significance, the relationship between these two constructs remains underexplored in Indonesian higher education. Objective: This study aims to examine and explore the dynamics relationship between burnout and academic procrastination among student-athletes at the State University of Surabaya. Method: A quantitative non-experimental design was employed using simple random sampling. Participants consisted of 135 active student-athletes who completed online questionnaires, including the Maslach Burnout Inventory–Student Survey (MBI-SS) and the Academic Procrastination Scale–Short Form (APS-S). Results: Analysis revealed a significant positive correlation between burnout and academic procrastination (r = 0.333, p < 0.001), suggesting that higher burnout levels are associated with greater tendencies to procrastinate academically. Furthermore, the Mann–Whitney U test indicated no significant gender differences in burnout (U = 991.50, p = 0.212) or academic procrastination (U = 1312.50, p = 0.484), implying that both male and female student-athletes experience similar levels of these challenges, Conclusion: The findings highlight the need to address burnout to reduce academic procrastination, improve student-athletes’ academic performance and well-being, and provide insights for developing effective preventive and curative interventions.
