Jurnal Desain recognizes that Artificial Intelligence (AI), including generative AI and AI-assisted technologies, may support certain activities in scholarly research, manuscript preparation, and editorial administration. At the same time, the use of AI must not compromise academic integrity, confidentiality, originality, authorship accountability, independent peer review, or editorial responsibility.
This policy applies to authors, editors, editorial staff, and peer reviewers involved in the publication process of Jurnal Desain.
1. General Principles
Artificial Intelligence must be used responsibly, transparently, and only within the limits appropriate to the role of each participant in the publication process.
AI systems:
Responsibility for any content produced, revised, analyzed, or supported through AI remains entirely with the human user.
2. Use of AI by Authors
Authors may use generative AI or AI-assisted technologies as supporting tools during manuscript preparation where appropriate. Such use must not replace the authors' intellectual contribution, scholarly reasoning, interpretation of evidence, critical analysis, or responsibility for the manuscript.
Authors remain fully responsible for:
AI must not be used to fabricate or falsify research data, research participants, observations, references, quotations, images, findings, or any other component of the research record.
Authors must not cite references generated by AI without independently verifying that the cited sources exist and accurately support the statements for which they are used.
3. Disclosure of AI Use by Authors
Authors are required to disclose the use of generative AI or AI-assisted technologies where such tools have contributed to manuscript preparation or research-related activities.
The disclosure should identify, where relevant:
The disclosure must be provided in the Artificial Intelligence Use Statement included in the manuscript.
Where no generative AI or AI-assisted technologies were used, authors should explicitly state this.
Routine tools that operate without generating substantive scholarly content, such as conventional spelling, grammar, reference-management, or formatting functions, do not normally require disclosure unless their use materially affects the scholarly content of the manuscript.
Disclosure of AI use does not transfer responsibility from the authors to the AI system or technology provider.
4. Artificial Intelligence Use Statement
Every article published in Jurnal Desain must contain an Artificial Intelligence Use Statement.
Authors may use an appropriate statement such as:
Where AI was not used:
The authors declare that no generative AI or AI-assisted technologies were used in the preparation of this manuscript.
Where AI was used:
The authors used [name of tool/system] for [specific purpose]. The authors reviewed and verified all AI-assisted outputs and take full responsibility for the accuracy, originality, integrity, and final content of the manuscript.
Additional explanation may be required by the Editor where the use of AI has materially contributed to research-related or manuscript-preparation activities.
5. Use of AI by Editors and Editorial Staff
Editors and authorized editorial staff may use AI-assisted technologies only as supporting tools for limited editorial or administrative purposes, provided that their use does not replace independent human editorial judgment.
Permissible editorial support may include, where appropriately controlled:
AI-assisted editorial support must not independently determine whether a manuscript is scientifically valid, sufficiently novel, methodologically sound, suitable for publication, acceptable, or rejectable.
All editorial assessments and decisions remain the responsibility of the assigned human Editor, Section Editor, and/or Editor-in-Chief.
Where AI-assisted technology materially contributes to an editorial assessment or decision-support process, its use must remain subject to appropriate editorial oversight and transparency.
6. Confidentiality in Editorial Use of AI
Editors and editorial staff remain responsible for protecting the confidentiality of submitted manuscripts and associated editorial information.
A manuscript or confidential manuscript material must not be entered into an AI system in a manner that could result in unauthorized retention, reuse, disclosure, model training, public access, or access by unauthorized third parties.
Where AI-assisted tools are used for permitted editorial support, the editorial team must ensure that their use is consistent with applicable confidentiality, privacy, data-protection, intellectual-property, and institutional requirements.
The use of AI does not reduce or transfer the Editor's responsibility for preserving the confidentiality and integrity of the editorial process.
7. Prohibition of AI Use by Peer Reviewers
Jurnal Desain does not permit peer reviewers to use Artificial Intelligence, generative AI, or AI-assisted systems in the peer-review process.
Reviewers must not use AI to:
Peer review must be conducted personally and independently by the assigned human reviewer.
The reviewer remains individually accountable for the review submitted to the journal.
8. Confidentiality of Peer Review
Submitted manuscripts are confidential documents.
Reviewers must not upload unpublished manuscript content to generative AI or other AI-assisted systems, regardless of whether the tool is publicly available, commercially licensed, institutionally provided, or accessed through a personal account.
This restriction protects:
If a reviewer is unable to assess a manuscript without using an AI system, the reviewer should decline the review assignment or contact the Editor.
9. AI and Editorial Decision-Making
Artificial Intelligence cannot make editorial decisions for Jurnal Desain.
Recommendations produced through AI-assisted editorial tools, where such tools are permitted under this policy, are treated only as supplementary decision-support information.
The final responsibility for:
rests with the responsible human Editor and, where applicable, the Editor-in-Chief.
Human editorial judgment takes precedence over any AI-generated recommendation or analysis.
10. AI, Academic Integrity, and Research Misconduct
The use of AI does not exempt authors or editors from compliance with Jurnal Desain's Publication Ethics and research-integrity requirements.
AI must not be used to facilitate:
Where problematic or undisclosed AI use raises concerns regarding the reliability, originality, confidentiality, or integrity of a manuscript, the journal may request clarification or supporting documentation and may take appropriate editorial action in accordance with its Publication Ethics policy.
11. Responsibility and Accountability
Authors are responsible for all content submitted under their names.
Editors are responsible for the editorial assessments and decisions made within their assigned roles.
Peer reviewers are responsible for personally conducting and submitting their independent peer-review assessments.
The use of AI or AI-assisted technologies does not transfer, reduce, or eliminate these responsibilities.
Jurnal Desain reserves the right to request clarification regarding AI use when necessary to protect the integrity, confidentiality, transparency, and reliability of the scholarly publication process.
