Abstract

One of the unique aspects of the Toraja tribe lies in its traditional house, called the Tongkonan. This research will provide insight into the physics principles present in the framework of the upper part of the traditional house of the Toraja tribe. The aim of this research is to identify the physics principles found in the framework of the upper part of the Tongkonan house. The type of research used is qualitative research. Data collection activities were carried out through interviews, observation, and documentation. The research location was in Lembang Tumbang Datu, North Sangalla District, Tana Toraja Regency. The results of the study indicate the presence of physics principles in the upper framework of the Tongkonan house that are important to understand, such as Pressure (P), Newton’s Third Law, and Rigid Body Equilibrium. Pressure in the Tongkonan, especially in the upper part, occurs in the Tulak Somba and Lentong Garopang pillars with their supporting stones. Newton’s Third Law applies in the Sangka Longa section due to the presence of action force in the form of pressure and reaction force in the form of normal force. The upper part of the Tongkonan house can be said to be in a state of equilibrium because the Tongkonan house always remains stationary and does not undergo translational or rotational motion when subjected to force.
