Abstract

This study compares the effectiveness of briquettes made from peanut shell waste (PS) and sunflower seed shell waste (SS) as alternative fuels. The utilization of this biomass waste is important as a renewable energy solution amid the declining fossil fuel reserves in Indonesia.

Key parameters measured in the briquette evaluation include calorific value, moisture content, ash content, density, burning duration, and burning rate.

Briquettes made from peanut shells (PS) often show a calorific value of around 4,201–6,908 cal/g with low moisture content (about 4.1%) and low ash content (around 3.8%) in certain formulations.

Briquettes made from sunflower seed shells (SS) generally tend to have a lower calorific value, estimated at around 3,500–4,200 cal/g, although they remain competitive as household fuels. SS briquettes can have a relatively long burning duration of approximately 45–60 minutes per standard-sized briquette, with low moisture content (<8%) and low ash content (<10%).

Overall, briquettes made from peanut shells are more effective compared to those from sunflower seed shells in terms of their higher and more stable calorific potential, making them more recommended as efficient raw materials.
