Abstract

Kalanchoe pinnata (Lam) Pers., commonly known as Cocor Bebek, is a succulent plant capable of surviving in arid environments through a physiological adaptation known as Crassulacean Acid Metabolism (CAM). The aims of this research is to describe the stomatal activity of the cocor bebek plant which one of the species with a CAM (Crassulacean Acid Metabolism) photosynthesis pathway. This research used descriptive qualitative method with purposive sampling. The method is observing stomatal activity were conducted on the lower leaf surface using a clear nail-polish replica technique and a light microscope every three hours.  The results show that the stomata of Kalanchoe pinnata remain mostly closed during the daytime and open at night. The widest stomatal opening occurred at 21:00, with a higher number of open stomata compared to other observation times. This activity is one of the physiological adaptation of CAM plants, which close their stomata during the morning until afternoon day to reduce water loss and open them at night for carbon fixation. The stomata identified were anisocytic and predominantly located on the abaxial leaf surface. This study confirms that the opening and closing pattern of the stomatal of cocor bebek is closely related to water use efficiency mechanism characteristic in CAM plants.
